This piece does not represent the city literally. It is an abstract form that I dedicated to this fascinating metropolis where it was first exhibited.
Sometimes I create pieces without consciously thinking of a specific design letting the wood tell me what it wants to be. This sculpture is the result of that process. My wife suggested Ptah for the name which is an ancient Egyptian deity, a creator god and patron deity of craftsmen and architects.
I love the asymmetrical forms of water running around stones in a stream, the undulations of a banner flowing in the wind, and the ocean surf. Those images informed the creation of this sculpture. My sculptures will last in a covered courtyard as pictured here.
The flames of a campfire are an infinite display of sculptural designs. They appear for a fraction of a second and sometimes can be captured in a photograph. They are natural forms that fascinate me.
Having watched the wave pattern of my own heart during an angioplasty operation, I decided that it was a design I had to create in a sculpture. It is a design that is very appropriate for a medical setting. My veterinarian has one in the lobby of his clinic.
Like jazz music, this piece is an improvisation. Like a recording of a spontaneous musical moment that can be listened to again, this design can be repeated.
The idea for this design did come to me in a flash, sort of. Like ideas for many of my sculptures, they are a variation of another design, in this case, a variation of Lightning.
